Deck builders in Four Corners

Decks for one of the fastest-growing corners of the valley, where US 191 meets Highways 84 and 85.

Four Corners is an unincorporated census-designated place about seven miles west of Bozeman. It almost doubled in a decade, from 3,146 residents in 2010 to 5,901 in 2020. The name comes from the junction of US 191, Montana 84 and Montana 85, and the Gallatin River forms its western edge. It sits at about 4,718 feet.

Typical projects here

  • First decks on recently built houses that came with a slider and no deck
  • Larger decks on acreage lots with room to spread out
  • Decks oriented toward the Spanish Peaks and Gallatin Range
  • Composite or low-upkeep decks for busy commuters

Who handles permits outside the cities?

Four Corners isn't inside Bozeman or Belgrade, so neither city's building department covers it. Gallatin County hasn't been a state-certified building inspection jurisdiction, and a 2013 engineering column in Explore Big Sky noted that state law exempts the state Building Codes Bureau from issuing residential construction permits in such areas, while electrical and plumbing permits are still required. The building code still applies to how the deck is built. Rules can change, so have your builder confirm current requirements, and check any HOA covenants and county land use rules for your parcel.

Near the Gallatin River

Lots close to the river may fall in a mapped floodplain, which can mean extra review for new structures. Check flood maps early.

No inspector? Still build it right

Where no building inspection happens, it's on you and the builder to get footings, framing and snow load right. Ask what depths and loads they design to.
